Bridging the gap between insight and action
Many children, particularly those in care, are facing delays in accessing psychological support that are at odds with the time-sensitive nature of their needs. BERRI’s add-on clinical services seamlessly extend the impact of our digital tool. Local authorities, residential care settings, and foster care organisations are able to reduce uncertainty, support stability, and improve day-to-day outcomes for young people.
In addition to our consultations, assessments, and therapeutic options, BERRI also recognises the importance of supporting the mental wellbeing of children’s care sector workers. We offer specialised training programmes and reflective support packages that can improve both staff retention and the ability to deliver trauma-informed care.

Our clinical oversight service provides added reassurance that key indicators from BERRI assessments are not overlooked, supporting timely intervention and helping to reduce the risk of emotionally damaging and costly placement breakdowns.
A member of our clinical team reviews all newly completed BERRIs on a weekly basis. In cases where the child’s BERRI score is high, deteriorating, or there is an elevated risk score, our clinical team looks at the context and presenting pattern of concerns, suggests what actions might be appropriate to meet the needs of the child, and recommends a consultation or appropriate additional clinical services where needed.
"The clinical team from BERRI are analysing the data in the background all the time and will send us regular emails with a snapshot of “we might be worried about this young person” and a summary of need, which has been really helpful. It comes straight through to our [internal] clinical team, and it gives us a hook into thinking about “what’s going on right now, let’s take that to risk management, let’s [discuss] what formulations we have in place, are they right?” So we’re sealing the circle in terms of our multi-agency working. And the [BERRI] clinical team have been really responsive, so if we have any additional questions, they are there and they are able to make space for us."
Clinical Director of a large fostering agency
A consultation typically involves a reflective and therapeutic space facilitated by a member of our clinical psychology team around the young person’s BERRI profile and any carer concerns. It aims to further understand the needs of the child or young person, the adult carers, and the child’s professional network, and consider suitable next steps to address and support those needs. The consultation also includes a detailed follow-up report to summarise the discussion and recommendations.
"[The consultation] gave me a deeper understanding of the impact of the physical and emotional harm which [the young person] had suffered. There is a very clear difference for [the young person] in terms of [their] lived experiences now and as a result of the consultation, it further provided a more in-depth understanding of [their] experiences and best tailored support to meet [their] needs. The clear, easy-to-use system has been widely praised, and its ability to deliver quick, actionable insights has made it a vital part of the local authority’s work with vulnerable children."

We offer therapeutic support sessions and packages centered on understanding and supporting the therapeutic needs of children and young people. Starting with a consultation and assessment to understand the young person’s capacity to engage in therapeutic work, these sessions can be conducted directly with the young person and/or through sessions that focus on supporting staff. We integrate many different therapeutic approaches, depending on the young person’s assessed needs, including:
Our curriculum of psychology training has been designed to support children’s care staff, health, and social care professionals, and introduces key concepts for delivering psychologically informed care. We can also provide training services tailored to specific topics relevant to your organisation or team, such as:
Training can be delivered in person or online.
"The training helped me to understand my work on a different level, where I look more deeply into the young people’s life story.”
“It has given me more in-depth understanding and more confidence.”
“The training has helped me understand how the children are behaving. It’s not always naughty behaviour... I have practised some of the techniques to help soothe and calm the situation. This has helped massively."
Feedback from recent training sessions hosted by a national fostering agency
Are you looking to alleviate staff burnout and increase retention? BERRI recognises the unique emotional and psychological pressures faced by workers in the children’s care sector and can create ongoing reflective support around your organisation. These spaces can support team functioning, wellbeing, and morale (such as addressing risks of psychological strain, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma). We believe when staff feel heard and supported, they are better able to provide compassionate, effective care.
Are your staff support programmes having the desired effect? Our surveys explore aspects such as burnout, perceptions of the working environment, care strategies, and psychological knowledge. Aggregated results are reported back to the organisation, while individual employee answers remain confidential. If desired, we can also provide professional recommendations for support and/or training based on the results.

"Regular formulation meetings with a highly accredited psychologist and assistant psychologist allows key people in the children’s lives to be involved in care planning and target setting. This includes the whole care team working with the child. We have found that this empowers the staff team to really feel invested and able to give input into the child’s day to day care."
